Crafting Is Therapy
Transform everyday objects into works of art with paper, glue, and a little imagination.
Decoupage is one of the most accessible and rewarding crafts you can pick up. The word comes from the French 'découper' — to cut out — and the technique is beautifully simple: cut, layer, seal, and transform. From vintage furniture to glass vases, wooden boxes to terracotta pots, almost any surface becomes a canvas.
What I love most about decoupage is how meditative it is. There's something deeply calming about choosing papers, cutting shapes, and smoothing each layer into place. It asks you to slow down, to be present — and that's exactly the kind of therapy we all need.
Tips & Tricks
Mod Podge is the classic all-in-one glue, sealer, and finish for decoupage. The matte finish is most forgiving for beginners — it hides brush strokes better than gloss.
Tissue paper, napkins, and rice paper are ideal for beginners because they're thin and conform to curved surfaces easily. Thicker papers work great on flat surfaces.
Work from the center outward, smoothing as you go. Dampen tissue paper slightly before applying — it becomes more pliable and less likely to tear.
Always finish with 2–3 coats of sealer, letting each dry fully. For items that will be handled often, a varnish topcoat adds extra durability.
Sand wooden surfaces lightly and wipe clean. For glass or ceramic, a light coat of primer helps the Mod Podge adhere. Clean, dry surfaces are key.
Don't be afraid to layer multiple papers. Overlapping translucent tissue papers creates beautiful depth and color blending that looks intentional and artistic.
