Crafting Is Therapy

Sewing

Stitch stories into fabric — one seam at a time, one project at a time, one healing moment at a time.

Sewing is one of the oldest forms of human creativity — and one of the most deeply satisfying. Whether you're running fabric through a machine or hand-stitching by candlelight, there's a rhythm to sewing that quiets the mind. You start with flat pieces of fabric and end with something three-dimensional, functional, and beautiful.

Sewing gave me patience. Every seam is a small act of faith — you cut, you pin, you sew, and you trust the process. When a project comes together, the sense of accomplishment is unlike anything else. You made that. With your hands. From nothing. That's powerful.

Tips & Tricks

What You Need to Know

Learn to Read a Pattern

Sewing patterns look intimidating but follow a consistent logic. Start with patterns marked "Easy" or "Beginner" and read through all instructions before cutting a single piece of fabric.

Invest in Good Scissors

Fabric scissors are sacred — never use them on paper. A sharp pair of fabric shears makes cutting accurate and effortless. Dull scissors cause fraying and frustration.

Press as You Sew

Ironing seams as you go is the secret to professional-looking results. Press each seam open or to one side before sewing the next piece. It makes a huge difference.

Pin Generously

More pins mean more accuracy. Pin perpendicular to your seam line so you can sew right over them (carefully) or remove them just before the needle reaches each one.

Backstitch at Start & End

Always backstitch 3–4 stitches at the beginning and end of every seam to lock the thread. This prevents your seams from unraveling with wear and washing.

Pre-wash Your Fabric

Wash and dry fabric before cutting to prevent shrinkage after the project is finished. This is especially important for cotton and linen fabrics.
